Turkey wants to introduce a new hotel accommodation tax from next year. It should be between 6 and 18 Turkish Lira per day. So, for a week’s stay in a five-star hotel, you’ll have to pay around $ 22 more.
Previously it had been announced that the new tax would be linked to the cost of accommodation and services to hotels, and that would be to the detriment of the sites themselves. It has now been decided to introduce flat rates and transfer payments to tourists. Fees will be paid by all customers over 12 years of age in hotels from one to five stars.
Turkish hoteliers opposed the tax on the hospitality industry, and now do not support tourism tax also. The president of the Aegean Hotel Association said it was “a punishment for the tourism industry for its success.”
The Association of Russian Tour Operators has already announced that if the new tax is introduced, tourists will probably have to pay for it out of pocket.
The tax will start to be collected from April 1, 2020, and it will be 1% of the total payment received from customers (from 2021, the rate can be increased to 2%). Treasury money will not be paid by tourists themselves, but by hotels, apartments, motels, campsites and bed and breakfast. The calculation basis includes the price of accommodation and all services available: catering, spa, fitness, entertainment, conferences and much more.
