Night train services from North Wales to Europe are part of the new German plan

PLANS have been unveiled for a trans-European ‘night sprinter’ rail network connecting North Wales to major EU cities by 2030.

The German Green Party has launched proposals for the night service stretching from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon to Istanbul and St. Petersburg with the aim of reducing the number of flights.

The 90 / Greens Alliance released a map showing how the system would work ahead of the national elections on September 26.

It offers a continental network with Holyhead to connect to Europe via a connection to London, with rail to reach all major European capitals.

German Green MEP Terry Reintke welcomed the proposals today on Twitter.

Beside a map of the proposed network, she wrote: “What a dream: a night train from Frankfurt to Edinburgh.

“The German Greens have come up with a map of possible night train routes to Europe. There is a lot to discover. I love it.”

Reintke later told The National: “Bringing people together is one of the main goals of the European project. The next few years will be crucial for investing in a European rail network.

“We want to create a climate-friendly, comfortable, affordable and accessible rail network across Europe. This is why the European Commission and the Member States must step up their efforts to build a European network of night trains. The next German government can play a crucial role in this regard. ”

Lorna Slater, co-leader of the Scottish Greens and Scottish Government Minister for Green Skills, Circular Economy and Biodiversity, also welcomed the proposals.

She tweeted: “See how cool the future can be? There is no need to go back to where we are now, we can make it better.”

Among the services are Bangor in Bordeaux with the city also connected to Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Other towns along the North Wales coast, including Prestatyn and Rhyl, are also said to be linked to Munich, Brussels and Warsaw among many other cities.

German Greens leader Annalena Baerbock had previously suggested her party would cut tax subsidies to airlines and increase the frequency of long-distance and overnight train travel as an alternative.

In their plans, the party said “fair competition” between air and rail travel must be introduced to tackle the climate crisis, adding: “Those who travel a little longer to protect the climate should not have to. pay extra.

“At present, international air traffic enjoys huge tax advantages: airlines pay no tax on kerosene – railways pay a tax on diesel – and international airline tickets are even exempt. VAT.

“These distortions of competition urgently need to be corrected. We need cheap train tickets that can compete with air fares.

“We can make night trains more attractive in terms of price by offering products suitable for all budgets.

In June, French startup Midnight Trains unveiled tentative proposals for a “luxury hotel on wheels” connecting Edinburgh to Paris by 2024.
