Llangollen: planning application for Royal Hotel approved

The planning application to turn the historic Royal in Llangollen into a ‘destination’ hotel has been approved by Denbighshire County Council.

Overlooking Centenary Square, it is Grade II listed and has been closed since 2019.

The application was submitted in March on behalf of Matt Jones of MAVI Properties Ltd based in Middle Sontley, Wrexham.

At the time, the company said the development would create the potential for around 45+ jobs.

The application explained that the purpose of the plan was to “create a place of destination and improve the accessibility of the existing historic element”.

A council spokesman said permission for the application had been granted under delegated powers and allowed the demolition of the original existing extension, the erection of a four-storey extension to the side and in the back, including a health spa and additional hotel rooms.

The spokesperson added: “The erection of a two-storey kitchen extension in the existing courtyard as well as the installation of a canopy and rear terrace and associated works are also approved.

“Officers have also recommended that Consent to Listed Buildings be granted for the same work under application reference 03/2022/0174. However, this recommendation is currently under review by CADW.

The original planning application stated that in 2019 a public consultation meeting was held at the Royal Hotel to allow local residents and business owners to meet the project team and review and discuss the design intentions.

He said: ‘During this meeting, the project’s aim of transforming the Royal into a ‘destination hotel’, potentially with a Michelin star restaurant, spa and terrace with the capacity to create around 45 jobs, was been discussed.

“The intention to develop the project with the local authority and CADW has been declared, not only to preserve the historic features of the building, but also to provide an asset to increase footfall in the town. As part of the discussion, the issue of erosion of the existing waterfront wall was raised and remedial work was then completed in 2021.”
