Fishing boat carrying a crew of 11 takes on water before bursting into flames off the Cork coast

A fishing vessel was said to be in trouble about 60 miles southwest of Mizen Head, Co. Cork, on Wednesday.

The vessel with a crew of 11 on board reportedly took on water and lost propulsion.

Valentia Coastguard is coordinating assistance to the boat and R115 is on scene.

In a statement on Twitter, the Irish Coastguard said: “Valentia Coastguard is coordinating assistance to a fishing vessel reported to be in difficulty approximately 60 miles south-west of Mizen Head, Co Cork. The vessel has a crew of eleven, is believed to be taking on water and has lost propulsion. R115 is on site.

The crew has abandoned ship and all members are safe aboard another fishing vessel.

The stricken vessel has now caught fire.

The Irish Coastguard said: ‘R115 and Air Corps Casa at the scene. Coordination Valentia CG”.
